I don't have much to say today – just like the majority of Democrats in Congress. Where are they, by the way? Where's Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, or House Minority Person, Nancy Pelosi? Or any other Dem who has clout and a loyal base, such as Barbara Boxer.
Where are the headlines spouting something any of them have said or done lately? Beyond Dianne Feinstein's attempt to gain support for Gun Control Background Checks, I don't recall the last time a Dem (beyond the now-retiring Barney Frank) publically sounded-off, stood up, and spoke Plain English to their constituents and Party Base concerning how the GOPer's continue to obstruct positive movement on almost anything due to their dislike of Obama. Sure, we know it's going on, but the perception of Democrats' being weak amidst the mess isn't helping.
No responses from Top Dem's to today's admission of same from GOP Senator, Pat Toomey, who made it clear that Background Checks were voted down by Repub's because of such pettiness? Who duct-taped the Dem's mouths? Are we only to see and hear from those on the slightly lower echelons of politics out on the TV and radio circuits to defend their Prez and Party? It's been that way for far too long. The quiet. The overly-genteel words. The seeming tip-toing through the Pouty Lips of GOP Extreme Madness as if one "wrong" word would cause yet another childish reaction from the faction of what I certainly deem to be Anti-Patriots, which would, of course, provide more fuel to the hot fire pit a bunch of someone's placed on the floor of The House in 2010 to create further disharmony within government.
Newly-Minted Senator, Elizabeth Warren, seems to be the only Dem willing to call-out such games. She is doing so because, it would appear, she hasn't been in town very long and doesn't feel the need to worry about stepping on expensive footwear while doing the job she was voted-in to do – which is to represent the people who placed her in Washington. Politician's often "forget" the Real World when they step into The Bubble, particularly if they have been there for a while. We know it. We've seen it. We are still seeing it by the absence of strong, pointed words by people who stand in front of microphones to talk in convincing tones about why they should receive the job they are asking the crowds to give to them. These are people with an ability to influence others with their words. Why then, do words fail them so often when showing guts would bring far more applause than the hecklings of their detractors?
Are they trying to "rise above" the kindergarten antics of the GOP House and Senate Obstructionists? If so, they aren't parenting their young very well. Ignoring blatant bad bahviour can encourage additional tantrums. Saying nothing isn't leading. Being too "polite" isn't showing maturity in every situation. Diplomacy in our current political atmosphere has yet to change how partisan Congress has become.
One of the reasons why both Dem's and GOPer's respect NJ Governor Chris Christie at times is how willing he is to speak from his very large gut. I may not agree with his political positions, but I do like his bombastic style when "straight talk" is required. Now is one of those times when someone other than Dem. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (for a change) needs to take a verbal stand of strength against the opposition without fear of reprisal by anyone. America likes people who take risks. It is risky to tell the truth in Washington lest one not be invited to the latest soiree, or the next VIP Golf Game, or, horrors! being ignored by colleagues in the corridors of The Almost Mighty's House!
As a long-time Democrat I'm growing quite frustrated with the Sounds of Silence by my representatives. What do I expect from Strong Words From A Democrat? If nothing else, the PERCEPTION that someone is awake on The Hill and will not accept another 4 years of Bigotry (because that is really what is at the very bottom of the morass) and will name names and toss shame where it belongs. Allowing the GOP to continue hanging themselves by their own nooses won't change a thing (although they do a wonderful job at it). It's time – now – for the Dem's to cease with passive non-actions, no-words, and humour a few of us by refusing to allow the Media Attention to always focus on the Wing-Nuts in the GOP and, instead, say something that will re-focus attention back to why the country voted for a Democrat as President – again, which, at the very least, may bring more light into the shade of fading Cherry Blossoms on Washington's Famous Trees.
Something like that.
Rant over.
